  • Bar-Ilan University to Award Honorary Doctorates to Eight Outstanding Individuals and Organizations

    Marking Israel's 70th anniversary and the 63rd annual session of its Board of Trustees, Bar-Ilan University this week will award Honorary Doctorates to eight individuals and organizations whose impact on a broad range of disciplines is felt in Israel and around the world.  The University will also present an Award of Distinction to 2018 Israel Prize winner Prof. Shlomo Havlin, of the Department of Physics.

    Bar-Ilan University's 2018 Honorary Doctorate recipients are:

    Yoram Cohen, former Director of the Israel Security Agency (Shin Bet), will be honored for his service to the State of Israel and lifetime of strategic decision and policy-making which has kept Israel safe and secure.

    Etgarim-Challenge, the rehabilitative organization for the disabled, will be recognized for its empowerment and social integration of individuals with mental, emotional, and physical disabilities through outdoor sports activities.

    Malcolm Hoenlein, Executive Vice Chairman of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, will be honored for ensuring that the voice of organized American Jewry resonates in key diplomatic and political circles, and for acting as a guardian of world Jewry.

    The IDF Orchestra which will perform at the gala ceremony, will be feted for its role in uniting the State of Israel's military forces and troops who proudly serve and protect our nation.

    Jewish communal leaders Evelyn and Dr. Shmuel Katz will be recognized for their commitment to Israel, the Diaspora community and Jewish education, and their dedication to strengthening the People and Nation of Israel.

    Spiritual leader and teacher Rabbi Dr. Binyamin (Benny) Lau will be acknowledged for his efforts to forge a unified and just society in Israel and his engagement in discourse that bridges gaps between religious and secular Jews.

    Israeli poet Agi Mishol will be honored for her lyrical poetry, which reveals the story of Israel and its people from her personal perspective as the child of Holocaust survivors.  

    Ronnie Stern, President of the American Friends of Bar-Ilan University, will be recognized for advancing the University’s prominence and promoting its achievements.

    Bar-Ilan University will also present an Award of Distinction Prof. Shlomo Havlin, recipient of the 2018 Israel Prize in Physics, for his groundbreaking research in statistical physics which has contributed greatly to the advancement of science.

    The Honorary Doctorates and Award of Distinction will be awarded at a gala ceremony in the Dahan Family Unity Park on Tuesday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m.
