Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari Elected for Third Time to Prestigious UN Committee

    Date: 2014-07-02 Hour: 12:56

Prof. Ruth Halperin-Kaddari, Director of the Ruth and Emanuel Rackman Center for the Advancement of the Status of Women in the Faculty of Law at Bar-Ilan University, has been elected to a third term on the United National Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).

This is the first time an Israeli candidate has been selected for the third time to a UN human rights committee.  The election took place at UN Headquarters in New York.

Prof. Halperin-Kaddari's reelection to CEDAW is particularly significant since it comes at a time when Israel's status at the UN is at an all-time low. She won a staggering 128 votes from a total of 188 voting countries.  Fifty nations, including the newly-acceded State of Palestine – which refused to acknowledge Israel's vote – abstained.

In her past eight years on CEDAW, Prof. Halperin-Kaddari has initiated the adoption of a new General  Recommendation on the Economic Consequences of Family Relations and their Dissolution. This is a landmark result for Israel.

Prof. Halperin-Kaddari established and now chairs The Rackman Center, which is soon to celebrate its Bat Mitzvah.  Her fields of expertise include family law, feminist criticism of law and women’s rights in international law.  She received her LLM and PhD in law from Yale University. Prof. Halperin-Kaddari is a firm believer in combining academic research with practical steps in order to bring about change in the status of women in family law both in Israel and elsewhere, and is very proactive in the achievement of this goal.
