Prof. Karl Skorecki, Dean of Bar-Ilan University’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine, has won a prestigious prize for immigrants to Israel, in recognition of his “extraordinary contributions to society and the country.”

Prof. Skorecki, a nephrologist, arrived in Israel in 1991 on sabbatical leave from the University of Toronto. Following that year, he immigrated to Israel, bringing with him not only his family, but also valuable academic knowledge and experience. Prof. Skorecki graduated with honors from the University of Toronto, specialized at Harvard and served as Director of Nephrology and Professor in Medicine, Pediatrics and Clinical Biochemistry at the University of Toronto.

"From the first time I visited Israel at the age of 15, I knew I wanted to live here, despite the good and comfortable life I had in Canada and the warm Jewish community," says Prof. Skorecki.

In Israel, Prof. Skorecki headed the Department of Nephrology at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa and served as Professor of Medicine at the Technion - Israel Institute of Technology, and was later appointed Director of Medical and Research Development at Rambam.

Relating to his current position as Dean of BIU’s Azrieli Faculty of Medicine in Safed, Prof. Skorecki says: "I feel I was reborn for this purpose of furthering the Zionist dream.”

Prof. Skorecki was awarded the prize at a commemorative event for immigrants held by the Israeli Ministry of Aliyah and Integration in November 2019.
