New Chair for the Study of the Jerusalem Talmud to be Established

    Date: 2018-10-08 Hour: 14:56

Bar-Ilan University has signed an agreement for the establishment of an academic chair – the first of its kind in the world -- for the study of the Jerusalem Talmud.  The chair will be named in memory of the late Major General Rabbi Shlomo Goren, former Chief Rabbi of Israel, and is being created thanks to the contribution of Rabbi Goren’s children, retired Judge Tehiya Shapira, Dr. Drorit Tamari and Attorney Rami Goren.

"Aside from being an outstanding talmid chacham (Torah scholar) and foremost authority on Jewish law, Rabbi Goren was blessed with unique qualities -- courage, wisdom, and the ability to lead. The absence of these qualities is evident in today's Israeli reality,” said Prof. Zaban at the signing ceremony.  “We can be comforted by the fact that by creating the Shlomo Goren Chair for the Study of the Jerusalem Talmud we will be privileged to pereptuate the teachings of Rabbi Goren -- renewing the tradition of the study of the Jerusalem Talmud.”

"By establishing this chair in tribute to Rabbi Goren, the University will perpetuate his research and his innovations in the revival of the Jerusalem Talmud," said Rector Prof. Miriam Faust. “Rabbi Goren’s family chose to eternalize his name in this way so that the subjects that were so close to his heart will continue to be studied by researchers and students for many years to come.”

Rabbi Goren’s daughter, retired Judge Shapira, noted that her father's “commitment to the study of the Jerusalem Talmud, to the glorification of the Talmud and its interpretation of its special language, stemmed mainly from, and was a direct continuation of, his love for the Land of Israel and the importance of the State of Israel -- the beginning of our redemption also from a religious perspective."

Prof. Leib Moscovitz, a world-renowned expert in the study of the Jerusalem Talmud in the Naftal-Yaffe Department of Talmud, will serve as the incumbent of the Shlomo Goren Chair for the Study of the Jerusalem Talmud, which will be housed in the Faculty of Jewish Studies.   Prof. Moscovitz thanked Rabbi Goren’s children for the special opportunity afforded him and for their great effort in raising awareness of the Jerusalem Talmud.

Rabbi Goren’s extended family also attended the signing ceremony in addition to Bar-Ilan University Director General Zohar Yinon, Vice President for Development Dr. Merav Galili and Shlomo Zohar, Chairman of the Council of Trustees.
