  • Twelve Researchers Receive Rector's Prize for Scientific Innovation

    The 2018 Rector's Prize for Scientific Innovation has been awarded to 12 faculty members in recognition of their outstanding scientific achievements.  The recipients were selected by a committee headed by University Rector Prof. Miriam Faust, and including Vice President for Research Prof. Shulamit Michaeli, Prof. (Emeritus) Moshe Deutsch, and Prof. (Emerita) Roselyne Koren.

    The 12 outstanding researchers are:

    Dr. Michael Blank, Azrieli Faculty of Medicine

    Dr. Michal Ben-Shachar, Department of English Literature and Linguistics

    Prof. Mira Barda-Saad, Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences

    Prof. Sharon Gannot, Alexander Kofkin Faculty of Engineering

    Prof. Tsilly Dagan, Faculty of Law

    Prof. Ehud Weiss, Martin (Szusz) Department of Land of Israel Studies and Archaeology

    Prof. Galit Nahari, Department of Criminology

    Prof. Uri Nir, Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences

    Prof. Avi Pe'er, Department of Physics

    Dr. Beena Kalisky, Department of Physics

    Prof. Assaf Rinot, Department of Mathematics

    Prof. Yaron Shav-Tal, Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences

    "Every researcher experiences certain periods in which great, innovative, and groundbreaking achievements suddenly come to light.   This award is one of honor, and when a person receives this kind of honor it gives him a new soul.  It fills him with life and gives a boost of energy to continue forward," said University Rector Prof. Miriam Faust in congratulating the recipients.

    "Innovation is added value, providing new solutions to great questions," said Vice President for Research Prof. Shulamit Michaeli. Research generates impact.  There are great human problems that need to be solved, and we want to offer integrated solutions to researchers from different disciplines who will come together to achieve significant achievements. I congratulate all the winning researchers and wish them additional breakthroughs."

    On behalf of the award recipients, Prof. Uri Nir, of the Mina and Everard Goodman Faculty of Life Sciences, said, "Discovery, innovation, and breakthrough are themselves a worthy reward for researchers for their tremendous investment in research and science. The Rector's Prize for Scientific Innovation carries an important message that encourages a committed and continuous research effort, along with the pursuit of unpaved research paths.   Walking along these unpaved paths is risky, but may also lead to breakthrough findings."
