    Date: 2017-09-28 Hour: 9:34

Prof. Rachel Weissbrod, Chairperson of the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies, has been elected to the Executive Board of the International Doctoral Network, which was founded by the European Society for Translation Studies. Doctoral programs, including that offered by Bar-Ilan's Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies, must meet stiff requirements in order to be accepted into this PhD network. The selection of Prof. Weissbrod as a member of the Executive Board attests to the international reputation of Bar-Ilan's Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies.

Bar-Ilan University is the only university in Israel that awards a Master's and Ph.D. in Translation and Interpreting Studies and the only one that trains oral translators, who, upon completion of their studies, become simultaneous translators at conferences, conventions and diplomatic events. The training of translators in a variety of languages makes the department a multi-lingual and multi-cultural hub where veteran Israeli students meet new immigrants and guests from around the world.

Prof. Weissbrod joined the Department of Translation and Interpreting Studies in 2003, following the approval of the Council for Higher Education to convert the Department's diploma program into a full academic program. Her research covers a wide variety of subjects, including theory of translation, literary translation into Hebrew, translation for the media, and the interrelation between translation and other forms of transfer. As a historian of translation into Hebrew, Prof. Weissbrod has written about legal translation beginning with the Ottoman period and cinematic translation from the British Mandate period, among others.  She has been invited to participate in many conferences, some sponsored by external organizations, such as the British Academy.
