Information Systems

Description

The Information Systems Department is responsible for defining and designing, developing, operating and maintaining the software systems serving the university's management, administrative entities, faculties, academic departments and students.

Over the years, the department has acquired knowledge and understanding of the processes required to sustain routine campus operations. The work is carried out in close cooperation with the relevant entities. The department offers computing solutions that support the work processes and increase their effectiveness. Advancing technologies and the competitive market present the department with many challenges, requiring it to continuously keep abreast of new developments. The department's staff continually masters the new tools that the market offers, and incorporates them into the systems for which it is responsible.

Platforms and development tools

  • The services of the Information Systems Department are supplied on a variety of platforms (MF, UNIX, PC), and in different development environments (Adabas/Natural, Oracle-Applications, Oracle-Developer, J2EE, Lotus-Notes, VB, development tools for the web, etc.). Using advanced middleware tools, which intermediate between the various types of systems, the department continuously integrates longstanding Legacy systems with modern systems.
  • The majority of the systems are  internally developed. Some of the systems are based on purchased, specialized software, and the department is responsible for adapting this software to the local work environment, and for its ongoing maintenance.

Consulting services

The Information Systems Department supplies consulting services to administrative entities that are interested in examining computerized solutions, and assists them in their communicaion with the external service providers, as needed.

Lotus Notes

Based on a decision made by the university's CEO and the rector, the organizational messaging system (mail, calendar management, etc.) is based on Lotus Notes. The Information Systems Department maintains the system and develops organizational applications over the product's infrastructure.

Bar-Ilan University's web site

The Center for IT Infrastructure & IS was one of the pioneering operators of web sites for academic purposes in Israel. The university's site, managed and supported by the Information Systems Department, serves as a forum showcasing the university and its academic activity.
