IT Infrastructures

Description

The IT Infrastructures Department is entrusted with the tasks of constructing, developing, operating and maintaining the IT infrastructures. The infrastructures comprise a basic layer, upon which the software applications are built. These include data communication, communication networks, servers, operating systems, databases and infrastructure applications. The department comprises units specializing in specific areas, with the aim of best serve its purpose of providing customers with quick, high-quality services. The units comprise a knowledge center that provides consulting services to the entire campus in their respective areas of expertise.

1. Central Computer (Mainframe)  Operating Systems Section

The section is responsible for the basic software of the mainframe computer (MF). It supplies infrastructural services for administrative applications and databases, and also enables remote access to information.

2. Open Systems Section

The section is responsible for operating the central UNIX & Linux servers, departmental servers, personal workstations, heavy numeric computation servers, backup servers, file servers and central printers. On the applicational level, the unit is responsible for the e-mail infrastructures, the address server (DNS and DHCP) and Listserv, RADIUS services, smart card (SecureID), web servers, WebSphere, software installation and more. It provides support services to the Help Desk and computing coordinators, which assists customers.

3. Communication & Networking

Communication & Networking is responsible for supplying communication infrastructure throughout the campus, and for maintaining contact with the Internet provider (the Inter-university Computation Center). It manages various hardware and software systems for this purpose. The infrastructure serves local networks, linkup to the Internet, e-mail and various other applications.

4. Database Administration

Database Administration is responsible for a variety of products, including databases (Oracle and Oracle products, such as Oracle Applications Developer, Discoverer, MSSQL, Natural/Adabas), which are implemented on various platforms (MF, UNIX, Windows).

5. Operation Section

The Operation Section is responsible for operating the main data centers on campus, as well as for maintaining hundreds of heterogeneous servers and the passive communication system. It is also responsible for operating the university's main computer system and coordinating the handling of the Center for IT Infrastructure & IS's physical infrastructure.

6. Personal Computing Systems Section

The section is responsible for supporting, developing and implementing the personal computing operating systems and the infrastructural software, from the desktop computer level to the local area network (LAN) systems and the infrastructural services based upon it. Additionally, the section is responsible for managing the maintenance of the central servers farm based on Novell and Microsoft operating systems, and of the infrastructural applications operating on these servers. Additionally, the section supplies consulting services and determines the configurations of the servers and personal computers.
