Midrasha for Women

The Midrasha was established in 1982 in response to the increasing demand for advanced Torah study opportunities for Jewish women.  Hundreds of female graduates of the IDF and Sherut Leumi (Israel’s National Volunteer Service) study at the Midrasha, Israel’s foremost women’s Torah institute.

The Midrasha students, who are all enrolled at Bar-Ilan in full undergraduate and graduate programs, take on an extra load of courses given by prominent rabbis and Torah scholars, in Bible, Talmud, Midrash, Halacha and Jewish thought.  Courses also include professional development classes and education programs for teachers.

Special emphasis is placed on promoting independent Torah research, community involvement, and halachic expertise in family and women's issues.  The Midrasha also encourages community involvement and provides its students with broad halachic knowledge in issues concerning various social and cultural questions.

A unique program at the Midrasha offers a group of brilliant women, working toward their PhD’s in a variety of academic fields, the opportunity to study Torah in an elite program, preparing them for dual roles as academic leaders and talmidot hachamot.

In another initiative, secular women students engaging in havruta learning with young Midrasha scholars may earn credit for one Basic Jewish Studies course.  Classes focus on intensive Torah education in Oral Law, Halacha, Bible, and Jewish Thought.

A novel program for outstanding recipients of Doctoral Fellowships of Excellence who engage Torah studies in addition to their academic specialization (e.g. psychology, life sciences, education, Land of Israel studies, classical studies) aims to enrich the University’s faculty ranks with women academicians who are also “talmidot chachamim.”
