Tzevet Klita (Absorption Team)

The Bar-Ilan University Tzevet Klita (Absorption Team) operates under the auspices of the Jewish Agency and Ministry of Absorption. Its main function is to help recent immigrants to Israel acclimate socially and culturally into society. The team consists of five counselors, one for every group to which it caters. Over the course of the year, the counselors meet one-on-one with their students and create strong bonds of friendship and support. According to Yami Levin, the counselor for Bar-Ilan's Anglo community, "the personal meetings are very helpful in deepening our understanding of the students and in locating the areas in which we can help them."

Yami, 21, made aliyah four years ago with her family from the U.S. State of Maryland. She is now in her second year of studying social work and has gained experience in event planning and social counseling from working in summer camps and youth groups. "The more you engage yourself in your surroundings, the more you'll feel at home and want to set down your own roots," she believes.

From movie nights to trips and weekend retreats around the country, the Tzevet Klita strives to help create an atmosphere of community and joint experience. As part of the acclimation process, students are encouraged to retain the traditions and customs they've brought with them from their birth countries and incorporate them into their new life in Israel. The team celebrates the Ethiopian Sigd holiday and the American Thanksgiving every year and encourages native Israeli students to participate, as well.

In addition to social events, Tzevet Klita also offers a wide array of services in order to help students succeed academically. The year starts with an orientation for first year students, preparing them for the year. Before finals, the Tzevet Klita organizes an session in which students are informed about the university's test-taking rules and procedures. Additionally, academic guidance, career counseling and time management workshops are provided.
