Bar-Ilan University is the fastest-growing institution of higher education in Israel. Those pursuing their BA, MA and PhD degrees on our award-winning campus just outside Tel Aviv and in our six regional colleges across Israel are joined by thousands more who are enrolled in certificate and enrichment programs, including the largest in-service teacher training program in Israel.
The sterling academic experience provided by Bar-Ilan University is what one would expect from any world-class institution, in Israel or elsewhere: we impart knowledge to our students, and provide them with the critical ability and tools to analyze that knowledge, to study academic subjects with rigor and discipline, and apply their findings and understandings to contemporary realities.
But at Bar-Ilan we are not satisfied with merely being another great research university. We see our mission as something far more challenging and historic. We build character and leadership for Israel and the Jewish nation, based on the belief in the centrality of Israel to the Jewish world as its national homeland. We provide opportunities for our students and faculty to draw from traditional Jewish values to shape their deeds and destiny.
The University is comprised of students from all over Israel; secular and religious; Jews and non-Jews; Sabras and new immigrants. Included within the BIU family, as well, are a multi-faceted academic faculty and administrative staff. Their confluence represents a mosaic of the State of Israel, providing a unique atmosphere for open exchange of ideas and embracement of the "other." Diversity is a key on the BIU campus, and tolerance and civility our operating code.
At Bar-Ilan our students learn to assume social responsibility. They are provided with an opportunity to become knowledgeable Jews, both formally, though our unique program which requires every student to take academic level Jewish studies courses, thereby grounding them in the basics of Judaism, and informally, through the vast multitude of Jewish experiences available on campus.
To paraphrase the inspirational quote of a renowned 19th century figure: At Bar-Ilan University we provide our students with “wings and roots” – the wings to ‘fly’ academically, scientifically – to push back new boundaries of knowledge, learn new things, explore new intellectual universes; and the roots to 'bind' them to this earth, to ensure they fulfill their moral and ethical obligations, and become better people and better Jews.
It is this ability to fuse a reverence for Jewish legacy and heritage with the rigors of academic study which makes Bar-Ilan University like no other.
The Bar-Ilan University Logo
The Bar-Ilan University logo reflects the dual core aims of our institution: the pursuit of academic excellence along with Jewish heritage study. Fused together, the letters form Bar-Ilan's Hebrew initials – Bet and Aleph – which are also the first two letters of the Hebrew alphabet. In elaborating upon our raison d'etre, Bar Ilan University President, Prof. Moshe Kaveh, quotes the Midrash Rabbah which relates that Aleph was distraught that the Bible commenced with Bet (Breishit) until the Almighty declared that the Ten Commandments would begin with Aleph. Explaining that the Bet alludes to creation and the scientific realm, while Aleph signifies the search for divine wisdom, Prof. Kaveh stresses that it is the union of science and religious values, along with respect and tolerance, which makes our institution so unique.
The BIU symbol was originally crafted by the noted British graphic designer, Abram Games, at the time of the University's founding in 1955. Over the decades, with the growth of the Bar-Ilan University community, the BIU emblem has given visual expression to our "Tradition of Excellence" in combining cutting-edge research with training of highly qualified professionals in the sciences, humanities, law, engineering, business, and the arts – all within a unique learning environment which fosters Jewish values and continuity.
From its globally-recognized leadership in nanotechnology, Biblical archaeology, and engineering to its 1,800 Judaism-related courses offered under the auspices of the world's largest Jewish studies faculty, Bar-Ilan University is making its impact felt as it meshes the microscope and Torah scroll – high-level scholarship and Jewish heritage into tomorrow's culture of excellence.
